Army of the Dead
The Esfah Sagas: Tales of the First Age #3
Honor. Glory! ...Necromancy.
...and of course, dragons.
Following the Battle of Wakefield Plain, the Lava Elves are driven back to their eastern home and the Dwarves of Dehnlee are looking forward to peace, but when the Dead begin to rise and form a new army of darkness, the Dwarven army is forced to fight once more, this time against an army which includes their own deceased brethren.
The Warlord Adelric, weary from the Battle of Wakefield Plain, finds contentment in his Dehnlee home, off the coast of the Delmara Bay. His tranquility is shattered all-too soon with rumors of an army of darkness rising past the nearby Boland Marsh: a new evil led by an unseen enemy.
Now thrust into a new conflict with an evil wizard, Adelric faces his toughest opponent yet: one who can revive dead soldiers as they fall, creating a new and powerful undead army. Can the war-weary Adelric marshal his forces one last time against this latest threat to his homeland’s peace?

First up, I got my copy direct from the author's website so this will not show up as verified. That said, on with the review.
I read the original version (just Edo Van Belkom) years ago, wasn't too impressed to be honest. Christopher D. Schmitz has since become the writer for DragonDice/Esfah fiction and has done a good job making the few previous books more harmonious and expanding upon the world of Esfah in a grand fashion.
While the basic plot remains the same, there are a lot of details and small additions that really improved on the original. In many ways just the addition of some backstory for our chief undead antagonists improved thier characterization. Renata is still a fairly scary but ineffective leader, while Peregrine became less comical and slightly more sympathetic.
The heroes of the tale are mostly unchanged and the focus remains on the Vagha (dwarves) but it did feel like there was a bit of an expansion on the Selumari (Coral Elves) as well.
In addition Schmitz managed to turn this otherwise disconnected story into a bit of a prequel for villains that show up in other of his Esfah books.
My only complaint is there appear to be frequent typos with words running together or being split up in wierd ways...though they may actually be printing errors. They make it feel like this may have been rushed to get it out by Halloween.

We've waited over 20 years for this novel and it's finally here. From the very beginning we are given brutal and grotesque imagery of the struggles of warfare. And we learn of how even those who fiercely oppose the god of Death can foolishly succumb to his will in misguided rage and desires.
Army of the Dead takes us into Esfah from the Undead's point of view. We see how they first become undead, how they see this world, and how they hunger both to grow their numbers and wreak death upon others.
Unfortunately, this book has several grammatical errors, demonstrating the need for better proofreading and editing before being published. The story and writing are magnificent, but the errors are a major distraction that breaks the ability of being able to fall completely into the story.

The Battle of Wakefield Plain was over. The Lava Elves were driven back, and once again the dwarves from Dehnlee looked forward to peace.
But will the peace last?
The story is well written, and i enjoyed it i am sure you will too.

I love the game universe that this book is set in. I love the way that Treeshaker is pulling the stories by various authors into a cohesive whole. I can't wait to see what the changes are to this story to mold it into the larger story line that is being developed!

Been a fan of the game the story is based on since 1995, can't wait to see what the rewrites do for the overall story
