Bloodguilt (Shadowless 1)

Bloodguilt (Shadowless 1)

Shadowless: The Affliction Cycle Part 1
Nuclear fire brought endless night. The darkness hides invisible terrors known as entities.

Sheltered in the underground Ark 1 facility, Earth’s last 300 humans fear the dark above all else... the shadows hide an ancient, primal evil—one that can take control of people, and which humans have no defense against. Deep within the miles of well lit corridors, the lights begin to flicker and fail.

Before a new darkness falls, a drug addict and a man with Downs syndrome must reclaim the light and stop a new and final demonic Armageddon... but they learn that someone inside Ark 1 had more to do with unleashing these hellish fiends than any of the survivors know.

Just read this book and I found it very entertaining. It was different then the regular old zombie apocalypse books. It would be a good movie if done right. I meet Mr. Schmitz at the Fan fest in Chicago. He sold me on this book. I’m glade I pick this book up and the prequel.

I first found this series through a free download of the prequel. I liked it so much I immidietly searched for the rest of the series. Often reading these 3 books in one go, I’m now off to get the rest of the series. I definitely recommend this series. Also for anyone that avoids books with a religious theme or partial theme? This not like those. Give these book a try and you well be glad you did. On a side note there are some errors that I wish had been caught before publication but so far as I have noticed it is more a lack of some words. Such at sentences like “on the way to the facility” but with one word missing. This happens throughout all the books I have read in this series and is somewhat annoying, but does not hinder the story or the enjoyment of it.

I don't usually write reviews but really wanted to for this one. I bought this book from the author while I was at Twin Cities Con this year. The author and I had a quick nice chat and I bought The Shadowless: The Affliction Cycle. Having just completed it, I have to say that I really enjoyed it. Things I liked: The main character Swag develops as a person through the story and you feel this as it develops. You feel his struggles, doubts, and fears. The story is a great combination of post-apocalyptic horror with a helping of science and the perfect seasoning of religion/faith. Morality is a significant theme in this book and it made me think "Where do you stand?" even after I finished reading. An antagonist that is truly terrifying. Things I thought could be better: I wanted a bit more world building. Specifically, around the entity detection/tracking/capture technology. I found myself wanted to know more about the Baconator (love the nickname), Hermes, and the science. There were a few editing errors that ruined the flow for me. I wanted to get to know some of the other characters better. I would have loved to see more about how Ricky, Michelle, and Father came to be and what they were thinking. Overall, the good far outweighs the bad and I highly recommend this novel to anyone who likes post-apocalyptic horror or someone who likes fictional stories that make you question things like science vs. religion, the morality of "the greater good", and makes you question "what would you do?" Thank you Christopher Schmitz for closing out my 2022 with a banger of a good read.

I've only ever read Schmintz's Chronicles of Esfah fantasy books before this, but wanted to give this one a try. I'm glad I did. Trying to give a spoiler free review won't be easy, but I'll give it a go. If you're expecting a zombie apocalypse you will be disappointed, the enemy are possessed, while there are many thier really strength is the ability to jump from victim to victim and to manipulate the rest of humanity into destroying themselves in an effort to destroy the entities or to set them 'free' The book is full of both wonderful and terrible human characters (many of them both at the same time, which makes them truly human). There are certainly some cliches (but when dealing with the end of the world it's hard to avoid them) there are also a lot of wonderful innovations in the idea of survivors of the doom of the world facing extinction and the hope that they are not the only ones left. I highly recommend the book for an interesting and ultimately spiritual look at an end of the world survival story.

This book was chilling. If you weren't afraid of the dark before you may be now! Very good cast of characters and again this read like a great horror movie! The entities are awesome and scary as heck! Anytime someone in the book was confronted with darkness or shadows I was on the edge of my seat! I highly recommend this series!!

The few remaining survivors of mankind are hiding in a vault which is beginning to malfunction. As the lights go out, the threat which ended most of humanity gets ever closer. Features some unlikely protagonists, and a scientist in need of redemption. Had my interest from start to finish!
