Rise and Fall of the Obsidian Grotto

Rise and Fall of the Obsidian Grotto

The Esfah Sagas: Tales of the First Age #1
Elves. Dwarves. Blood Oaths & Dragons.
There are far worse things crawling upon Esfah than goblins...
...some, even swords and sorcery cannot defeat.

A devious elder monster allies with the lava elves of the Obsidian Grotto. She promises to provide an elven general with arcane weapons to throw down their dwarven enemies, and also the support of a black magic wielding cult hidden within the Nhur-Gale Forest. General Shedakor assumes that any bargain with such a dark creature would extract a high cost... but can he afford to pay it?

Meanwhile, on the far side of Esfah. An elven hero from the northern coasts embarks on a mission to protect his home from the goblins of Brackishomme swamp. But Davian Whisperwynd is prone to rash vows and the gods will not release the adventurer from a promise to lay down his sword: an oath that complicates things when he promises a beautiful enchanter that he will retrieve an item from the lair of the Death god himself.

Neither knows it, but the gods of fate have interlinked their destinies.

True to the central conflict that the world of Esfah revolves around, this story does a great job of bringing together and introducing the first races and pitting them against the forces of Evil. The book has some good character building, and the overarching story is great. There's some vernacular choices that I disagreed with but they're easy to overlook. I enjoyed reading the incorporation of realistic war strategies combined with the unexpectedness of magic employment. The overall book had a "fun" feel to it in spite of the seriousness of the story, which I actually enjoy as well.

The first new novel set in the world of Esfah is almost two decades, brings new depth and richness to this war-torn land. The characters are engaging, the plot is well-constructed and it leaves the reader wanting to turn "just one more page" Highly recommended

Good read with a nemesis of epic proportions. Sshkkryyahr the elder monster was the hi-light for me. Her top half is a gorgeous (nude) lava elf, her bottom half a spider. She's both seductive and deadly. If you love Dungeons & Dragons, Forgotten Realms, LOTR, or WOW, you will like Dragon Dice fiction.

Finally! Esfah is taking its rightful place as the premier fantasy world as it should have always been. The Rise and Fall of the Obsidian Grotto continues developing the world of Esfah and the heroes and villains involved in the first age. You could think of this more as PreHistory to the other series. Great book and looking forward to getting a hold of more of the series.

This tale is filled with all sorts of creatures - heroic and monster in an epic battle of good vs. evil. This is the first book I have ever read in the Dragon Dice/Esfah world. While it was a good read that kept my attention throughout, I was put off by the often very poor grammar and the occasional strange manner of talking of some of the characters that did not seem to be consistent throughout the book. I received this book from the author at no charge but the opinions expressed are all mine.

I was thrilled to see new Dragon Dice/ Esfah fiction come out after more than a decade... That said I was not disappointed. I was actually more fascinated by the expanded creation myths at the start of the book and the strange journey of Davian than the conflict of the Obsidian Grotto itself, lol. Still it is a great book. If you already love Esfah you will love the book...if you are just looking for new fantasy, you will still enjoy it!

I have been waiting about a decade for a new book in the Dragon Dice universe and Christopher D. Schmitz delivered wonderfully. I devoured this book in a weekend and it held me captive from the get go. I can't wait to start in on book 2 and I look forward to the rest of Christopher's adventures in the world of Esfah.

I've waited over a decade for a new book in the series, and now here it is, the first of many in the Esfah Saga. I have really enjoyed reading Chris's story, and see how well he has incorporated all the stories from the previous authors before him. The story is fantastic and I look forward to what's coming up next in the series! This novel is based on the game Dragon Dice and ties into the game so well, bringing the world to life! The story itself is fantastic and had me on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happens next. It was amazing seeing the different characters' motives and faults, and how that drove the flow and pace of the story. Chris also added so many creative and fitting elements of how the gods and the beings in the world interact and conflict with each other. He also does a fantastic job of setting up just enough background story in almost a mini-story kind of way and weaves some of the background stories throughout the book. Great author. Fantastic fictional universe. Incredible story!
