The Last Watchmen (Dekker's Dozen 2)

The Last Watchmen (Dekker's Dozen 2)

Space mercenary Dekker Knight and his team must do the unthinkable to prevent the Sun's annihilation before his archenemy can bring what a confused time-traveler calls "the divine engines of reality" to a grinding halt--destroying all that is, will be, and ever was!

After constables botched notorious criminal Prognon Austicon’s incarceration, Dekker’s team is forced to hunt down the galaxies’ most heinous criminal all over again when a mysterious man claiming to be an ancient, time-traveling prophet intrudes. Ezekiel claims Dekker will soon annihilate all reality—and he knows all of Dekker's secrets: that he wields an ancient, celestial weapon, was once married to a terrorist, and is the last member of the Watchmen—an ancient secret society with roots tracing back to Solomon.

How often can The Dozen escape death? How much can Dekker defy fate before his actions break the universe?

What a great space opera series. There is a lot happening in this series with the multiple factions of good and bad. There are some seriously evil villains' and then there is the Dozen. Fantastic story that has tons of action and humor. I thoroughly enjoyed these books!!

I was told this book had a "Firefly" feel to it, which of course raised my interest. I would also agree with one of the other reviewers here that it also has a "Magnificent 7" appeal. I'd already read Christopher's "Indie Author's Bible" as a good reference for my own writing career. this is the first story novel of his I've read. It did not disappoint. Although billed as Science Fiction, it manages to blend an amazing array of features from other genres. There is fantasy, and a unique perspective on religion in the universe. It also touches on political situations that may be mirrored in today's society, but it pulls it off in an entertaining way. The antagonists are not pushovers. Their leaders are calculating, efficient, and bring their own resourceful surprises to the table. I only wish we got to know other members of the Dozen as well as the main protagonists, but they set the background as a dependable crew to have when the universe is going crazy and one needs to break interstellar law in order to save Earth. Great action scenes...from gunfights to sword duels and capitol ships. This was a fun adventure, and I'll have to grab the other books as well.

I found this book to be a fast moving theological thriller with some space opera, time travel, zombies, and an ancient society. Dekker's dozen are licensed investigators, and sometimes it takes a little force to keep the peace. Sometimes it takes a little force to do what’s right. But Dekker is more than a space-age mercenary. He’s the last watchman, and now he has to prevent the destruction of reality. The writing to this book was professional and smooth, the action flowing from one sequence to the next with good causality, making the reading easy to follow. The descriptions also are vivid so that I could easily picture what was happening. As far as characterization, there was a Firefly kind of feel to the Dozen. I found some interesting and developed characters such as Vesuvius, who might be more than just a fellow mercenary; Ezekiel, who might be more than just an old prophet; and the Krenzin, who might be more than just an alien race. The zombies are not your typical man-eating kind of zombies either. Instead, they are wholly unorthodox. Even more interestingly, the characters played into the overall theme and message of the book. I enjoy theology but I don’t typically read it straight up. It’s like eating dry toast. At the same time, I enjoy fast-paced science fiction and fantasy, but all that action feels pointless without a message. So I like my weighty issues to be delivered with a good dose of fun. This book combines them both so that there’s great action, but at the same time that iceberg is hidden beneath the surface, making the endeavor more worthwhile. I’m sure I missed a lot of the deeper stuff, but I think it’s a layered affect. The more you know the more you take away. That way there’s something for everybody. Overall, I found this book to be an original and refreshing mixture of theology, sci-fi, fantasy, and storytelling that I think you will enjoy.

There are two major ideas that the author investigates through the novel: righteousness and religion. And by funnelling his characters at break neck speed towards a single arena climax like gladiators the author keeps the novel from becoming a weighty over extravagant tome. The construction of story is beautiful in its simplicity, and the author’s choices to mix and match strictures of the science fiction genre are interesting. In defiance of the standard of science fiction (mostly dealing with technological marvels that have improved life for humans), instead the story focuses on the physical, spiritual and mental potential of humans. My personal favourite character from the lengthy list of well-constructed characters, and who receives a significant arc is a female character, Vesuvius, who I found not just there and thought-out as the love interest. The concepts of justice and truthfulness that ripples through the dialogue can be viewed as a signalling against placing too much worldly power into the hands of any one charismatic leader, which seems most appropriate in our current world. But, if you’re a fan of epic fantasy or large-scale science fiction, and are not afraid to examine weighty issues such as religion and human endurance, then I would strongly recommend ‘Dekker’s Dozen: The Last Watchmen’ and put it on your reading list.

You know what you get from the Look Inside Feature. If you like a crazy mashup of religion and Sci-Fi, this is for you. In particular, I thought words/language used was good, and the action scenes were well described.
